چکیده

Carbon or graphite fi ber composites are replacing metal structures and parts in many industries, such as aerospace, general transportation, high performance automotive, and sporting goods. These materials are favored for their reduced weight and greater strength relative to traditional metal parts. For example, the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 are both made of approximately 50% composite materials, including wing and fuselage sections. Military jet fi ghters and naval craft also use this material to improve performance. These critical and complex composite applications require new and sophisticated analysis tools for development, maintenance, and repair purposes.

Analysis of Artificially Weathered PET and a Separate PET Hydrolysis Evaluation Using the 4300 Handheld FTIR Authors

Elucidating chemical changes in carbon fiber composites prior to physical degradation has been effectively demonstrated using handheld FTIR analyzers [1]. This application note shows that a handheld infrared spectrometer is equally effective at measuring early onset chemical changes in environmentally stressed PET polymer, which precede cracking and other physical degradation processes. This is...

NON-DESTRUCTIVE THERMAL DAMAGE CHARACTERIZATION OF CORDIERITE-MULLITE REFRACTORIES

Abstract: Refractory materials containing cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) and mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2) are used as support in furnaces, because of their low thermal expansion properties which confer them a very good ability to thermal shock resistance. Composed of two phases presenting very different CTE (1.5–3×10-6 for cordierite and 4–6×10-6 K-1 for mullite), these materials can develop damag...

Handheld FTIR analysis for the conservation and restoration of fine art and historical objects

FTIR spectroscopy has long been used for the analysis of art and historical objects in support of efforts to conserve, restore and validate authenticity of these rare objects. The value of the technique for this application lies in its inherent sensitivity, specificity and non-destructive capabilities. Typical applications include analysis of paint pigments and binders, lacquers and finishes. F...

Non-Destructive Testing of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic by Infrared Thermography Methods

Composite materials are one answer to the growing demand for materials with better parameters of construction and exploitation. Composite materials also permit conscious shaping of desirable properties to increase the extent of reach in the case of metals, ceramics or polymers. In recent years, composite materials have been used widely in aerospace, energy, transportation, medicine, etc. Fiber-...
